What Was Apple CEO Tim Cook Doing at Roberto Cavalli?

It was influencers galore at Roberto Cavalli’s return to Florence this evening as the special guest designer at Pitti. Lucky Blue Smith was at a show for the first time in ages! Plus there was Johannes Huebl, Tim Cook, and Gabriel-Kane Day-Lewis!

Wait—whoa—what? Tim Cook? The CEO of Apple might be the most influential person in every influencer’s life (with all due respect to Google and Instagram, I’m talking hardware too), but he’s not often (ever?) spotted at shows.

Unlike the #influencers (Day-Lewis still had the sticker on the sole of one snakeskin Cavalli boot), Cook was very much flying the flag for tailoring. His fitted suit was as precision-tooled and pristine as a freshly unboxed iPhone X. But was it Canali, Zegna, or maybe Brioni? I didn’t quite get to ask. During a brief moment of face time preshow, the affable Master of our Universe conceded that he didn’t regularly get to shows because, “I’m often not in the right place at the right time.” He has spent the last few days in Tuscany, and sincerely gave the impression that it’s been a delight—which it absolutely is. We didn’t have the chance to confirm the drop date for the iPhone 9, but hey. To host Cook at his show represents a bona fide coup for Paul Surridge and Roberto Cavalli—and it was great to see such a titan of tech checking the latest in menswear. It certainly made for a front row upgrade.

Katie Holmes Finds the Perfect Summer Jumpsuit for Under $85

Katie Holmes might have channeled Jackie O.’s classic style earlier this week, but last night she loosened up with a piece from the disco era. Holmes kept things simple in a strapless JD Williams jumpsuit, which retails for under $85 and is an easy spring-to-summer staple.

Holmes has often embraced a single piece, such as overalls or vintage Ralph Lauren denim onesies. Today’s jumpsuit featured an intriguing asymmetric single shoulder that added to its elongating effect, carried over through neutral tone stilettos.

Everything You Need to Know About the Met Gala, According to André Leon Talley

The 2018 Met Gala is set for Monday, May 7, and as the world waits to see what the celebrity guests will be wearing, it’s worth refreshing your memory on all the pertinent details before the red carpet is rolled out. The Met Ball, of course, is the fashion world equivalent of the Oscars, an evening when designers, models, and Hollywood stars convene in the year’s most over-the-top looks. It’s a long-standing event that Vogue Contributing Editor André Leon Talley knows well. ALT (as he is known) has been a fixture at the fete since 1974, and so who better to turn to for a primer on the storied grand affair? This year’s theme is “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” designed to create a dialogue between fashion and the masterworks of religious art in the museum’s holdings. But first, a few essential talking points are in order: From the evening’s origins to the best Met Gala dress to date, ALT sounds off here on everything you need to know ahead of fashion’s biggest night.

What is the Met Gala?

ALT: The Met Gala is the Super Bowl of fashion. On the first Monday in May, everyone who is anyone comes to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the annual fundraising gala celebrating the Costume Institute’s magnificent new exhibition on a changing theme. It all started in 1946, and over the decades, it has become a grand affair—the party of the year. The one other constant is the red carpet fashion. There is nothing quite like it, and it is vital and exciting to be a part of that.

Who gets invited to the Met Gala?

The world’s best achievers in all the spheres of music, film, Broadway, and fashion, as well as simple supernova personalities. The list changes each year. My favorite guest was Diana Ross, also in a full-length dress of exotic feathers. Which bird was it, I am not sure: guinea hen, turkey, or some exotic bird. It was strapless and full-skirted.

What is the dress code for the Met Gala?

Dress codes vary. If you are Kanye West and Kim, you come in your own matching Balmain silver jacket and dress. If you are Beyoncé, you wear something that’s a big statement.

Do you have a favorite Met Gala memory from over the years?

My favorite memory is when Cher joined the gospel choir from a local church in Harlem one year when the Met was held in December. And also, I was there when she descended the escalator in her brilliant Bob Mackie sequin see-through jumpsuit, way ahead of her time, in 1974.

Zoë Kravitz Gives the Slip Dress a Cool New Makeover

Zoë Kravitz made waves in a feather-trimmed Saint Laurent minidress at the Vanity Fair Oscars party red carpet earlier this month. And last night in Los Angeles, at the premiere for Gemini, the actress pulled yet another jaw-dropping fashion moment.

Kravitz offset her slinky Prada slip dress with a blazer also by the Italian house. The feather-trimmed sleeves were a slick alternative to the boas traditionally paired with a bias-cut slip dress by Hollywood actresses in the 1930s. The tailored silhouette was a cool counterpoint to the fluid dress, while simple jewelry punctuated the ensemble with understated flair.

Hailey Baldwin Brings the Drama in the Full Coverage Puffer

Hailey Baldwin joined Kendall Jenner earlier today and attended Daniëlle Cathari’s first presentation for adidas originals in Soho. Like Jenner, Baldwin was dressed from top-to-toe in the Dutch designer’s innovative take on three-stripe dressing.

Baldwin’s extended puffer coat was a cool take on a winter staple, and made for a voluminous counterpoint to her sleek underpinnings. A tonally coordinated bodysuit was a clever alternative to the track top, while retro Run DMC-inspired pants completed the look with a bold pop. Platform heeled boots finished the outfit with a directional and fashion forward twist.

Emily Ratajkowski Proves Why the Best Golden Globes Makeup Happens at the After-Party

Last night's 2018 Golden Globe Awards showcased beauty notes designed to make a statement against the evening's all-black dress code, from the ubiquitous red lip to a sprinkle of emerald baubles, the latter of which paid homage to the Suffragist movement. For Emily Ratajkowski, a well-selected wash of striking color could be found at eye level, her almond gaze encased in a graphic pressing of watermelon shadow.

Makeup artist Hung Vanngo opted to turn the evening's collective lean toward carmine on its head, daubing Ratajkowski's pout with a shimmery pink nude that kept the focus on her high-impact eyes. Her power brow and swirls of apricot blush served as requisite signatures, while eyeshadow extended artfully away from the outer corners to Pop art effect. This isn't the first time Ratajkowski has embraced all-around eye color, but last night's iteration felt extra celebratory, and, when paired with glitzy hoops and glossy waves, made for an ideal addition to the event's menu of highly personalized beauty. Because a red lip is undeniably powerful—but so is a dose of irreverence.

Kim Kardashian West Tests Out Next Season’s Trickiest Evening Trend

Kim Kardashian West appeared on James Corden’s The Late Late Show last night to promote her newly released KKW Fragrance, before heading to the Bumble Bizz launch party in Los Angeles. For her TV appearance, Kardashian West took a page out of younger sister Kendall Jenner’s style playbook. Kardashian West channeled her inner Cher and donned Ralph Lauren’s beaded minidress. The original dress was paired with a glen plaid puffer, but Kardashian West kept things bare to highlight her physique. The beauty entrepreneur grounded her first look with a naked shoe for a leg lengthening effect.

To attend the launch, Kardashian West shrugged off her party dress for a tailored topper and shorts, ditching the shirt but accessorizing with a Yeezy gold medallion. While Kardashian West tested bike shorts earlier this year with more casual pieces in San Francisco, yesterday proved how sleek and sophisticated the messenger-friendly staple can be when paired with black tie.

“Having to Do This on Your Own Would Be Horrible”—7 Fashion Duos on the Rewards of Collaboration

In fashion, two is better than one. Look around: H&M is launching the collection Erdem Moralioglu designed for the fast fashion giant tomorrow in L.A. Earlier this year, we couldn’t stop talking about Louis Vuitton and Supreme. And don’t forget the 18 collabs Vetements did for its Spring 2017 show. Collaboration has become such a buzzword, in fact, Lou Stoppard of SHOWstudio has written a book on the subject; Fashion Together, published by Rizzoli, was released today.

Collaboration, Stoppard points out, isn’t a 21st-century phenomenon, but it has seemed to accelerate in the last decade, a fact that she chalks up to the industry’s fast pace. In the book, she quotes Rolf Snoeren of Viktor & Rolf, who said, “Having to do this on your own would be horrible. It’s a gift to be able to do it together.” As she watched the list of fashion partnerships grow, she started asking herself: “Who has the control? How is power balanced? Are there issues over ownership?” She came to the conclusion that collaborations “rely on some magic special ingredient. It’s a bit like romantic relationships really, it just works or it doesn’t.”

Stoppard’s first criteria for entry was that the relationship be unusual. “It would have been very easy to do a whole book just based on designers and their stylists or designers and their ‘muses,’ ” Stoppard says, “but I felt like that would have been too expected and maybe tired as a concept.” The second criteria was scoring in-person interviews with the collaborators together. That, she admits, was a bit like herding cats, and in the case of Shaun Leane and the late Alexander McQueen, it wasn’t even possible, but overall she was pleased by how much time her subjects gave her. “I think it’s a credit to how passionately everyone feels about the importance of collaboration.”

Fashion Together is a stuffed full of photographs, ephemera, and some of the most candid designer interviews you’ll read anywhere. “People were very willing to share their stories.”

No One Wore the Tommy Look Better Than EXO’s Chanyeol

The theme of Tommy Hilfiger’s Fall 2017 show may have been rock circus, but the most dynamic presence in the front row was a pop superstar. South Korean boy band member Park Chan-yeol (aka Chanyeol) stole the spotlight the moment he arrived, gaining the attention of photographers and countless fans who lined up to snap pictures of him with their iPhones. A singer, rapper, and member of K-pop juggernaut EXO, Chanyeol is a superstar in Asia and has the chic personal style to show for it. Where other celebrities may go with outlandish runway looks or clothes designed to get attention, Chanyeol often plays it cool, opting for a classic wardrobe that speaks to his status as a heartthrob.

Though he has experimented with wild hair colors and flashier looks in the past, Chanyeol’s wardrobe has become more understated of late. His Tommy look of a plaid shirt, white tee, and color-blocked windbreaker was fashionable without trying hard, and it’s that kind of effortlessness that he cultivates off-duty. Whether he’s breezing through an airport in an oversize trench coat and ripped jeans, or donning a Vetements bomber jacket, he’s the rare pop star who lets his attitude shine rather than his latest runway acquisitions—all of which makes him an ideal representative for all things Tommy.

See him headed into Heathrow in one of the brand’s gray sweatshirts and a pair of tailored trousers, or walking around London in a fuzzy blue and red fleece with a ’90s vibe. Chanyeol embodied the ease Hilfiger is known for, and provided the brand with something everyone can appreciate—effortless casual style.

Pink Dedicates Her Powerful VMAs Speech About Beauty and Body Image to Her Daughter

Tonight at 2017 MTV Video Music Awards, Pink accepted the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award—previous winners include The Beatles, David Bowie, Kanye West, Beyoncé, and most recently, Rihanna—for her inimitable impact on music, pop culture, and philanthropy. An honor she didn't take lightly, after performing a roaring medley of her most famous hits, the singer used her acceptance speech as an opportunity to speak candidly about body image and self-love, recalling a conversation she had with her 6-year-old daughter, Willow Sage Hart.

"Recently I was driving my daughter to school, and she said to me, out of the blue, ‘I'm the ugliest girl I know. I look like a boy with long hair,'" she explained. Bewildered at the admission, she came back to Willow with a PowerPoint presentation spotlighting gender-bending icons, such as Prince, Annie Lenox, and Freddie Mercury, explaining to her that they "live their truth, are probably made fun of everyday of their life, and carry on, and wave their flag, and inspire the rest of us." Underlining the fact that she herself doesn't fit society's narrow feminine ideals and has been criticized throughout her career for being too masculine, Pink posed four powerful, patriarchy-smashing questions. "I said to her, 'Do you see me growing my hair?' She said, 'No, mama.' 'Do you see me changing my body?' 'No, mama.' 'Do you see me changing the way I present myself to the world?' 'No, mama.' 'Do you see me selling out arenas all over the world?' 'Yes, mama.'" And that's how it's done.

Jennifer Lawrence’s Best Accessory Is Clearly Her Dog Pippi

This month, Jennifer Lawrence makes her second appearance on the September cover of Vogue. In the new issue, the 26-year-old actress opens up to Jason Gay about her professional as well her personal life, including two very special relationships: the romantic one she has with director Darren Aronofsky and the rather maternal one she has with her beloved dog Pippi. Lawrence constantly frets about Pippi’s welfare, and specifically whether the dog’s small size might make him susceptible to predators at her home in Los Angeles (where Lawrence has hung an oil portrait of the precious pooch). “Every 20 minutes I have a heart attack,” Lawrence admits in the interview. “I’m going to be a great mother.”

Dog ownership, despite its dubious stresses, has been an opportunity for Lawrence to make quite a few memorable style statements. The trick often starts from the ground up with practical shoes that toe the line between form and function. For instance, Lawrence wore suede Aquazzura espadrilles to dress up a pair of simple skinnies and a white tank while running errands with Pippi. On another occasion, she chose Alexander Wang grommet sandals to move a creamy slip dress to a directional new place—the ultimate piece to take its wearer from day to night (or rather the bedroom to the dog park) with ease.

Lawrence tends to gravitate toward tonal hues that lend even the most lo-fi of basics some polish. Look at the Alberta Ferretti outwear with the cozy shearling lining that mimics Pippi’s own fur coat for proof. She also packs in extra style points with her statement bags. Unlike Pippi, who is often transported in a traditional travel carrier, Lawrence has a rotating collection of bags—a textured Chloé shoulder bag, a studded Valentino tote, and a fold-over Victoria Beckham clutch among them. All leave her room to stow Pippi’s preferred essentials, such as the natty plaid bow tie he wore while catching a flight out of Los Angeles. After all, who says owners and their pets can’t have a shared love that extends to accessorizing?

Find these and more of Lawrence’s best fashion moments with her dog Pippi in the slideshow above.

Seasonal Shopping Slump? 6 Chic Summer Staples to Take Into Fall

Getting dressed in the morning becomes a little more daunting in August. Summer is winding down, but cooler temperatures have yet to set in. You can’t break out your heavy knits or boots, but the dresses and blouses you purchased in June leave you uninspired. Even Vogue editors hit the same late-summer slump. As Assistant Market Editor Madeline Fass puts it, “How am I supposed to shop for other people when I’m not even excited to shop for myself right now?” Fortunately, there is a solution for your inter-seasonal woes: the summer-to-fall transitional wardrobe.

The trick is to invest in staples that can be worn on their own now, then layered in the coming months. Street style favorite Rejina Pyo makes tailored shirts you’ll come back to each season, while Poland-based designer Magda Butrym has mastered the cut-out dress in dark and moody floral prints that work equally well in summer and fall. Not a fan of dresses or skirts? Cropped trousers are always worth picking up, so is denim in darker shades, like Lorod’s cult zip-through pants, as worn by the likes of Bella Hadid and Pop artist Haley Vassar. Last but not least, tie it all together with a lightweight statement coat, tossed loosely over both shoulders. Who said shopping in August can’t be fun?

Advisory Board Crystals Makes Transcendental Clothing for the Spiritually Connected

One way to describe Advisory Board Crystals, the California brand by Remington Guest and Heather Haber, is spiritually serendipitous. The couple met while sharing an Uber Pool ride in Los Angeles two years ago, and ended up at the same party later that night. “Truly divine timing in practice,” says Guest. The universe has been conspiring in magical ways for them ever since. “On one of our first ‘dates,’ he walked me into a crystal shop to buy me a lepidolite. From there, we knew crystals were a part of our love story,” adds Haber. Before they started Abc., as they shorthand it, the pair held positions at Band of Outsiders. Eventually, they just couldn’t not do their own thing. “In just a few months, we had already come up with the concept, the Instagram, the website, and future plans all in the works,” says Haber.

Up until now, Abc. has existed as a series of one-off projects and collaborations. The brand began with some truly groovy tie-dye shirts made in collaboration with Colette, Bergdorf Goodman, and menswear resale site Grailed. “The first shirt we ever did was representative of a rose quartz. The only way we could hit that visual was through a sort of dye process,” says Guest. From there, the tie-dye quickly became a brand signature that represented the mystery of crystals, but also the joys of getting dressed. “When I went to get dressed each day, today still, I want to wear tie-dye. We created our own tie-dye process. It’s similar to painting. We also utilize crystal-infused dyes that we create in our studio.”

Guest and Haber are as devoted to crystals as they are to fashion; they tell you the properties of amethyst, say, in the same breath that they rattle off the qualities of their favorite Nike sneakers. With Abc., they’re hoping to distance the stones from their kooky roots and bring them to a new generation of believers. “The visual and physical aspects alone are fascinating enough,” says Haber, “but when you add in the aspect of metaphysical properties and the infinite mystery that crystals embody, it makes them the most interesting subjects in the tangible world. I love crystals of all kind, including Swarovski, actually.”

Tomorrow, Advisory Board Crystals will launch their second collection, an exploration of spatial themes and emotional bliss. “Romantic” is how they both describe it, and with tees that read Soulmate Specialist, you can’t disagree. But like all things Abc., the latest offering has layers. The lookbook stars artist Jim Krantz, the photographer behind the iconic photograph of the Marlboro man that was reappropriated by Richard Prince. The images were shot at California’s Major Mount Wilson observatory, itself a sort of a temple to the intergalactic, by Guest and Haber on their iPhones and showcase their now range of printed tees and floral trousers. “When people look at the brand today, I’m sure most would say streetwear. But the plan we have is something else. We have a project with the New Museum in the works, amongst others that will begin to reveal the true vision of Abc.,” says Guest. When pressed as to what other projects are in the pipeline, however, the pair remains mum, emailing back—what else!—an emoji of a crystal ball.
